The British designer Antony Price, the groundbreaking UK-based designer behind a series of unforgettable images associated with musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has passed away at 80 years old.

Price was best known for his architectural shapes and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in rock band Duran Duran's landmark music video for "Rio".

"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' the band released a statement online."

This news arrives less than a month after he unveiled his newest line in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Artist Lily Allen modelled a dress evoking the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" once worn by Princess Diana.

A Pioneering Career

Born in Yorkshire in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the esteemed Royal College of Art.

Upon completing his studies, he commenced his career designing men's fashion at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that Sir Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's "Gimme Shelter" tour in 1969.

He established his eponymous line in 1979 and presented his inaugural collection a year later. The show opened with outfits on model Jerry Hall, who also wore the marriage dress Price created for her for her marriage to Sir Mick Jagger.

Working with Legends

A long-time collaborator of the late David Bowie, Price created the memorable jacket the star wore for his "the song As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.

His signature ability to merge menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping form-fitting garments cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," according to the British Fashion Council.

During the nineties, he began working on ensembles for Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall, which included various looks for her US tour after becoming Duchess.

With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London just last month in conjunction with the label 16Arlington.

  • Sculpted Silhouettes: The core of his aesthetic.
  • Theatrical Flair: Defining an era of music fashion.
  • Gender-Fluid Fashion: Blurring lines between clothing for men and women.
  • Working with Stars and Royalty: From David Bowie and Mick Jagger to Queen Camilla.

The fashion world laments the passing to a true visionary whose legacy on fashion and music remains indelibly etched.
