The deceased of a mother aged 34 and her 10-year-old daughter have been found inside freezing appliances in an flat in the western part of Austria.

The victims, a woman from Syria and her daughter, who had been missing for several months, were found on Friday. The cooling units were hidden behind a plasterboard wall in the apartment, located in the Innsbruck area.

A pair of males, a Austrian man, 55 and his 53-year-old brother, were taken into custody in June. The older man, a colleague of the Syrian woman, informed authorities last week that there had been an accident—but disputed intentional killing.

Speaking to journalists earlier, a representative for the legal authorities said the two suspects were being detained on "strong suspicion of homicide".

The names of those implicated have not been released by police, in compliance with local legislation.

Their going missing was first reported by the cousin of the mother, who is based in Germany, on the 25th of July last year.

Investigators stated the 55-year-old suspect claimed at the time she had gone on an prolonged visit with her child to visit her parents in the nation of Turkey.

The mother's debit card was then noted as being active in foreign locations on multiple occasions.

Yet when investigators searched the mother's apartment, her smartphone was discovered.

Someone also claimed listening to a disturbing sound in the flat, and shouts of "mum" on the occasion the two were believed to have vanished.

An expanded criminal probe was initiated, with authorities finding multiple communications transmitted via the mother's device—among them a notice of quitting to her company and messages to the male colleague.

Officials stated a significant cash transfer was also transferred to the suspect.

Katja Tersch informed the press on that day that a storage unit had been secured before the mother and child went missing and a freezing appliance had been positioned inside.

The brothers removed the appliance from the storage space on the day the mother and daughter went missing, she stated. And a shortly afterward, they acquired a second unit.

Investigators state they consider this suggests the deaths were intentionally orchestrated.

"The cause of death was not identifiable due to the state of decomposition of the bodies," she commented.

The prosecutor's spokesman—of the public prosecutor's office—stated the specific order of occurrences is yet to be determined, but the remains were professionally hidden and were not found during a prior examination.

Although the suspects were detained in the summer, it was not until 12 November that the suspect acknowledged an incident and to concealing the remains. He disputes any plan to cause death, officials said.

In a related development, his younger brother confessed to a attempt to hide evidence but rejected awareness of a killing.

The pair are currently in pre-trial detention in detention centers in two Austrian cities, situated at a distance.

In a joint statement, the nation's official for women's affairs and Justice Minister stated the "reported homicide of mother and child... represents the sudden and brutal end of a mother and child and reveals a heartless setup".

"Women and girls are falling victim to homicide due to the simple reality that they are female," they added.

"Murders of women are a deeply rooted and widespread concern that we must combat firmly."
