The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has stepped down as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This follows a judicial decision that challenged her legal standing to hold the office.
Official Departure
The head of the Justice Department, Pam Bondi, announced her stepping down on the start of the week. She commented that the appeals court finding made it impossible for the official to perform her duties.
"Let no one confuse compliance for surrender," she wrote. "The effort will now reach across the country."

Habba's exit comes a week after a federal appellate panel ruled that she had been unlawfully serving as the federal prosecutor. This decision is could influence scores of legal proceedings in the state.
The judicial panel ruled that a temporary posting that skirted confirmation by the US Senate breached the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.

The Attorney General added that the former prosecutor will continue working within the DOJ as a high-level advisor. Habba plans to pursue additional appeals of the court's action, aiming for a reversal.
Writing online, she wrote that judges "cannot be permitted to second-guess the appointment of lawyers responsible for performing the primary duty of the administration of criminal prosecution."

The attorney general praised Habba's record and noted that during her run, the state capital of Newark saw a 20% reduction in crime. It was also reported that the southern city of Camden recorded its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 without a homicide.

Habba, first joined the former president's legal defense in recent years. Subsequently, she defended her client in his New York criminal case in the previous year, which resulted in his conviction on 34 counts of financial record manipulation.
